FR. JOHN CHRISTIAN U. YOUNG ELECTED TO PAASCU BOARD
Chamber Newsletter December 2009 Vol. VI No. 12

The Timber City Academy and the Father Saturnino Urios University have reason to be elated, TCA Alumnus Rev. Fr. John Christian U. Young, TCA batch ’83 and Urios University President, was elected to the PAASCU Board. Fr. John had been an alternate member of the PAASCU, the Philippine Accreditors Association for State Colleges and Universities, for about a year when just this week, December 4, 2009 to be exact, he was elected as a regular board member.

Fr. John himself considers this as an achievement because even when he garnered the Magna Cum Laude honors in his college days, he just received the honor without advising us. Only this latest feat did we receive his text message. As Atty. Josefe Sorrera-Ty, Dean of the College of Law, said: ‘That’s great. He continues to bring honor and prestige to Urios.’ While Bishop Juan de Dios M. Pueblos, Bishop of Butuan comments: ‘Fr. John deserves it.’ On the other hand, Dr. Adelfa Yumo says: ‘Fr. John keeps adding to his long list of achievements.’

His ‘re-engineering of the financial system and organization of the then Urios College leading to financial sustainability and growth and providing leadership which led to Urios College being granted University Status within two years of assuming the Presidency. He led and managed the planning, construction and completion of the State-of-the Art, 3.5 hectares, Archbishop Carmelo Morelos campus which houses the Basic Education in Ambago are already major achievements. But most important, he ensured, together with the management team, the continued improvement of the quality and standards of the offerings and programs of the university.’ Note: Lifted from his Bio-data as prepared by the Butuan Global Forum.

This latest position entails more travel to all parts of the country, as he will be called upon to join in the evaluation of programs, facilities and other qualifications of colleges and universities for their admission to a higher degree of classification. All of these will redound to the benefit of the Urios University, as he could further update its standard As alternate then, he had participated in the evaluation of many of the major universities in the Manila area as well as in the Visayas.

The face lifting of the main downtown tertiary level Urios University campus, including the upgrading of the facilities of the various colleges, has been a wonder to many balikbayan alumni who visited their Alma Mater, and they are one in praising it. Many of them commented that Fr. John has set up many scholarship programs where donors have given big amounts to which poor but deserving students could apply for study grants. This is a big help to poor but intelligent students. In the case of Board Exams, the average percentage of passing is quite high. There are even Board Topnotchers. This is another honor not only for the university but for the whole region as well. Many Congratulatory messages were received when they heard about his PAASCU election.. Thank you for sharing our joy.
